Questions were asked about some of the tactical decisions he had made but Karthik managed to get most things right in their 34-run win over Mumbai Indians on Sunday scorecard Akshay Ramesh KolkataApril 29, 2019UPDATED: April 29, 2019 13:30 IST IPL 2019: Dinesh Karthik-led KKR kept their playoff chances alive with a win over MI on Sunday ( Courtesy by BCCI)HIGHLIGHTSDinesh Karthik said he tries to keep the morale high in the KKR campKKR snapped a 6-match losing streak after Sunday’s win over MIYou need to keep a smile. You need to be nice to others: KarthikKolkata Knight Riders captain Dinesh Karthik said it’s important to make sure his teammates are healthy and in “a great space”, especially when the team is going through a lean patch in a “high octane” tournament like Indian Premier League (IPL).Karthik said he makes it a point to keep negative stuff like back-biting and bickering away from the KKR camp.Karthik’s comments came after Kolkata Knight Riders snapped their six-match losing streak with a 34-run win over Mumbai Indians on Sunday and kept their chances of qualifying for IPL 2019 playoffs alive.”It’s a high-pressure sport, a high octane tournament and you’ve got to make sure everybody’s in a great space, give them the best chance to do well and stay healthy. A lot of bickering and back-biting can go on in these sorts of situations. I’m very aware of it and make sure nothing like that happens,'” Karthik said. The KKR captain added: “At the end of the day, it’s a game. You play the best that you can. You need to keep a smile. You need to be nice to others. Everybody’s trying hard. I always believe that at the end of the day it’s a game. We all go back home and we need to be happy.”I think they need to make sure they have a great experience playing with me. It shouldn’t be all about, ‘oh that guy was so bad when we lost’. I was very aware of that.”Captain Karthik has been under the pump over several tactical decisions he has taken in IPL 2019. KKR started the season with a bang but slumped to six successive defeats and were in danger of crashing out early until Sunday.advertisementKarthik was questioned over his decision to not give Andre Russell an opportunity at the top of the batting order. Russell himself had said that KKR need flexibility when it comes to batting positions in crunch matches. In the lead up to the must-win match against Mumbai, Russell pointed out how difficult it has been for KKR stars to deal with the losing streak.Russell, who has been in the form of his life, was sent in to bat at No. 3 vs Mumbai Indians on Sunday. The West Indies big-hitter made full use of the opportunity and smashed a 40-ball 80 as KKR posted 232 on the board.Similarly, Shubman Gill, whom many felt was being wasted down the order, came out to open and smashed his career-best IPL score of 76 from just 45 balls. Can’t say I should have been given a chance at the top earlier: GillSpeaking to the media after his match-winning knock, Shubman Gill defended the team’s move to use him as a floater, saying first-choice openers Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine have been in good form for KKR in IPL 2019.”Lynn has been opening for so long so we can’t push him down the order and Narine has been doing very well too. So, I can’t say that I should have been given a chance at the top of the order earlier but I am happy that I have the opportunity now and I capitalised on it,” Gill said.Having clinched a crucial win over MI, KKR have manged to live to fight another day. Karthik’s men will next take on Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians in their last two matches on the road and anything but a win can end their playoff chances. Also Read | Andre Russell’s wife on KKR star’s masterclass vs MI: Knew you were going to do thatAlso Read | Happy I capitalised on the opportunity to open for KKR, says Shubman GillAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
