Cristiano Ronaldo not the greatest. I am: Diego Maradona to India Today

first_imgArgentina great Diego Maradona has reiterated that he is the greatest footballer of all time. Speaking to India Today’s Boria Majumdar in an exclusive chat said he doesn’t blame Cristiano Ronaldo for calling himself to be the greatest because he scores a lot of goals. Ronaldo had recently said that he has no doubt that he is “the best player in history”.”To be honest, I find Ronaldo’s comments very funny. How can Cristiano Ronaldo talk about being the greatest when I am here. But I don’t blame Ronaldo because he is scoring goals. When I scored the goal against England in 1986 World Cup, I thought there can never be another player like me,” Maradona told India Today.”It’s hard to say one specific player is the greatest. Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar are great in current generation. There are many parameters to judge a footballer. For example, you cannot compare Zidane to Maradona. Zidane is tall and his aerial control is fantastic. But I can move swiftly between opponents legs as I am short,” he said.WATCH FULL VIDEOHe also said it was wrong to compare him with current Argentina captain, Messi.”On Messi, it’s not right to make comparisons. We are two different players who played in different eras,” he said.Marona further said he feels Germany will be the favourites to lift the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.Portugal and Real Madrid’s star striker Ronaldo was awarded the Ballon d’Or for world player of the year last week for a joint-record fifth time, going level with eternal rival and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi as the player to have won the prize the most times.advertisementThe Real Madrid forward won the award, handed out by magazine France Football, for the second consecutive year having led his side to the La Liga title with 25 goals and a successive Champions League crown, netting 12 goals including two in the 4-1 win over Juventus in the final.”I feel very happy, it’s a fantastic moment in my career,” Ronaldo said upon collecting the award, standing with his mother Maria Dolores and his oldest son Cristiano Jr.”I’ve waited a long time for this. This has been a stupendous year for me, we won the Champions League and La Liga and on a personal level I was top scorer in the Champions League.”Trophies help me win prizes like this and I have to thank my team mates at Madrid and Portugal. They’ve been very important to me.”Messi came second while Paris St Germain forward Neymar Jr, the most expensive player in the world, came third.Ronaldo, who this year also helped the national side qualify for the World Cup in Russia next year, won his first Ballon d’Or in 2008 while with Manchester United and collected it again in 2013, 2014 and 2016.The 32-year-old was last month named the Best FIFA Men’s Player in the global soccer body’s own awards ceremony.Real Madrid president Florentino Perez joined Ronaldo on stage and paid tribute to the Portuguese, who he said was the best player of all time alongside late Real great Alfredo di Stefano.”This fifth Ballon d’Or is a great honour and a great achievement for the club and Real Madrid fans around the world. Cristiano is the best player in the world, he represents the values of Real Madrid. Cristiano is the best player in history along with Di Stefano, he is his heir,” Perez said. The Ballon d’Or was first awarded in 1956 and was partnered with FIFA from 2010 to 2015, until becoming its own entity once again.last_img read more

Move to China? Iniesta is still needed at Barca

first_imgTransfers Move to China? Iniesta is still needed at Barca Ben Hayward 07:36 2/17/18 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(0) Andrés Iniesta Barcelona La Liga 01282018 Getty Images Transfers Barcelona Eibar v Barcelona Eibar Primera División Opinion The midfielder signed a “lifetime” contract with the Catalan club in October and would be better off staying at Camp Nou for the foreseeable future Andres Iniesta is the longest-serving player in Barcelona’s squad. The 33-year-old arrived at La Masia at the age of 12 in 1996, and has gone on to win 30 trophies for the Catalan club. So the thought that he may leave is probably too much for many fans to bear. All players move on eventually, either calling time on their playing days like Carles Puyol, to seek a new experience elsewhere as Neymar did, or to end their careers with a lucrative move to a lesser league, such as Xavi.Iniesta, it has been reported in the Catalan press, is being tempted by such an offer from China. As well as high wages, it is said to include an agreement for advertising campaigns and also commercial promotion for his wines. A Liverpool legend in the making: Behind Virgil van Dijk’s remarkable rise to world’s best player At the age of 33, he may well be tempted. In the knowledge that life after football will be less lucrative, players place much importance on their final contract and a mega-money deal in China would mean Iniesta would never need to work again. Not that he really does anyway, of course, but even the wealthiest footballers can get a little nervous about the future when their careers are almost over. And Iniesta probably lacks the personality to be a coach or even a pundit when he hangs up his boots. The midfielder brings in around €20 million after tax as part of his current contract, the first-ever “lifetime” deal offered to a player by Barca, and he is said to have turned down almost twice that amount (€35m) to play for an unnamed Chinese club.Meanwhile, reports in Spain claim the player has invested around €5 million in his own businesses away from football, including the production of wine, cheese and olive oil, and that he has lost money in those operations. However, he still should be more than comfortable on his current wages and for the moment, he is needed at Barcelona. Firstly, because he remains one of the world’s best midfielders. And secondly, to help January signing Philippe Coutinho adapt to life at the club.Philippe Coutinho Andres Iniesta BarcelonaBarca boss Ernesto Valverde was asked about the reports on Friday and said the club had not received any offer for Iniesta from China or anywhere else.”If that happens, we will think about it then,” he said. “I don’t have anything to say. I haven’t even thought about it. Iniesta is with us and we want him to help us a lot, as he always does.”Iniesta has played more under Valverde than he did last season under Luis Enrique, so it still seems the player has much to give at Camp Nou. And until the end of the season, he will focus on trying to help Barca win La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.Should Barca win another treble, he may just decide to walk away as Xavi did in the summer of 2015. That, however, would be a shame for the club, for the fans and for the player himself – because it will be a long time before the Camp Nou, or indeed Spanish football, sees his like again.last_img read more

However, Eriksen is seemingly keen to re-sign with Tottenham, but only if they meet his demands. He told TV3 Sport: “[The future is] not something I’m thinking of. I focus on playing football, and there are many battles you have to think about which must be won.”Responding specifically to Madrid’s interest, he added: “It is not the first time that there have been rumours, and when the newspapers write something, it is not something we are masters of. If there is nothing concrete, then I just comment on rumours.”I think people know what I want, and I know what they [Tottenham] would like. Actor Dominic Pace Talks Charity

first_imgLookToTheStars.org recently sat down with actor Dominic Pace about the causes close to his heart.Dominic PaceTell us about your favorite charities? The Dominic Pace/William Tagliaferri Scholarship. My Alma Mater, Ossining High School, in Ossining, NY, had tremendous impact on my desire to want to become an actor. I was very fortunate to have so many faculty members, family, and friends support me in my endeavors. Three years ago, I wanted to give back and give another student the same encouragement I received. It was my way of showing my gratitude to such an incredibly supportive community.Shane’s Inspiration was introduced to me by Madelyn Alfano, Owner of Maria’s Italian Kitchen here in Los Angeles. They build playgrounds for children with disabilities. One of their main events is a run at Griffith Park each Fall, which I’ve been proud to be a part of. They also accept toy donations throughout the year, and my two sons and I have gathered collections for their cause. How or why did you select to support the charities you currently work with?Ultimately, it’s all about giving back to our communities. Specific charities touch us as we’re able to relate in one way or another, and I think we’re drawn to the ones that connect us most with the human spirit. What is the most annoying thing about people that don’t help charities and why?A few years ago an old ‘friend’ couldn’t understand why I didn’t take my cash, and invest in my own children. My family and I are not rich by any means, but this person almost found it selfish to my children that I would do such a thing. I like to believe that I teach my two sons something much greater than putting $500 in their bank each year, versus helping out someone who is less fortunate than they are. As we all know, there is a lot of greed in society. Many deem their success by the car they drive, or how big their house is compared to yours. I like to believe the majority, however, understand the true definition of what it means to be rich. And how important do you think it is for celebrities to get involved in charity?Extremely important. I have such an admiration for so many fellow actors. I think Angelina Jolie comes to mind. If there is any value to fame, it is to have the ability to make a difference for the greater good of our respective societies. It’s something I plan to do my entire career. What plans do you have to make an impact on society this year?I plan to continue to donate to the grant I started for my alumni. I will also continue to play an active role in my involvement with Shane’s Inspiration, especially during the Fall and Holidays when their events increase.Find out more about Dominic Pace here.Copyright ©2014Look to the Starslast_img read more

Pace Is the Most Consistent Pitching Stat

In my article Friday about what’s slowing down Major League Baseball games, I use a relatively new stat called “pace.” It’s a measure of how much time elapses between pitches in the same plate appearance, making use of the PITCHf/x tracking system installed in every major league park. It can be applied to pitchers for all batters they face; and to batters for their plate appearances. One thing we already knew about pace is that it’s remarkably consistent from year to year. FanGraphs makes it possible to test that with a tool for calculating correlation between the same statistic across seasons. Pace’s year-to-year correlation is 0.859 among the 1,554 pairs of consecutive pitcher seasons for which FanGraphs has pace stats — from 2007 to 2013 for pitchers with at least 40 innings each season. That’s far higher than strikeout-to-walk ratio, which has a year-to-year correlation of 0.528; Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP), an ERA-like stat (0.443); winning percentage (0.081); and other fielding stats. The correlation persists over a gap of more than one season: It’s 0.757 from one season to another three years later. That suggests that the biggest factor affecting pace is the pitcher. Pitchers can change catchers, teams or leagues; face a mix of batters; and pitch in front of a different defensive alignment or in different contexts. Yet their pace of play stays largely the same from season to season. This is evident in the leaderboard: Five of the 10 slowest pitchers with at least 100 innings last year were among the 10 slowest in 2012.Like other new stats, pace is a work in progress. For example, there are two versions — one on FanGraphs, the other on Baseball Prospectus — akin to the competing versions of wins above replacement. FanGraphs registers more average time, typically, which BP’s Ben Lindbergh attributes to his site’s exclusion of pickoff attempts. One mystery is whether pace is associated with other pitching attributes. In a quick check using the FanGraphs correlation tool, it looked like pace was modestly correlated with FIP and Win Probability Added. But that was probably because relievers tend to have better stats than starters, and also a slower pace. There’s no reason to think one causes the other. When I restricted the sample to only pitchers with at least 150 innings pitched — thereby excluding most relievers — I found there was essentially no correlation between pace and FIP or WPA. Pitchers don’t seem to get any particular value out of a slow pace, though it’s possible they would have worse results if they had to hurry between pitches. In the spirit of their deliberate play, we won’t rush to judgment. read more

Pogba wants Italy return in January

first_imgManchester United’s Paul Pogba is keen on a return to his former club Juventus during the January transfer window, according to Metro. The Frenchman resigned for Manchester United back in the summer of 2016 for a then world record fee of £90million but has struggled to replicate the same performances from Juventus.Pogba is keen to leave Old Trafford after falling out with manager Jose Mourinho. The pair were involved in a heated bust-up with the United boss last term, which led him to be dropped from the team.Reports in the Italian press suggests Pogba’s poor relationship with Mourinho is the driving force behind his desire to leave Old Trafford. And the midfielder is planning a return to his former club where he would link up with Cristiano Ronaldo.Cristiano Ronaldo, Nemanja Vidic, Manchester UnitedVidic: “Ronaldo is the most professional footballer I’ve seen” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Nemanja Vidic opened up on how a 21-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo’s professionalism left him stunned at Manchester United. The Italian champions shelled out a club record €100million fee to bring the current Balon D’Or holder to the Allianz stadium in Turin.Should Pogba complete a shock return to Juventus, the midfielder would be able to play for the Italian club in the Champions League as UEFA have removed the ‘cup-tied’ rule from their competitions as of this season. But first, the France international must take on his former club in the Champions League group stage as United have been drawn alongside Juventus, Valencia and Young Boys in Group H.last_img read more
